Fugitives’ Drift Lodge and Guest House

Fugitives’ Drift Lodge and Guest House, overlooking the Buffalo River on the historic Anglo-Zulu War battlefields, offers an experience where history, heritage, conservation, and community come together in one extraordinary setting. Founded by the late David Rattray and his wife Nicky in 1989, it is still family owned and run by Nicky and her son Doug.  Fugitives’ Drift is internationally renowned for its immersive battlefield tours to Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift. Led by passionate and knowledgeable guides, these tours explore not only the military strategies and human drama of the conflict, but also the courage, leadership, and cultural richness of the Zulu people.

At the heart of Fugitives’ Drift is a deep respect for the Zulu nation and its history. Guests gain meaningful insight into Zulu culture, traditions, and perspectives ensuring a balanced and authentic understanding of this defining chapter in South African history.

Beyond the battlefields, Fugitives’ Drift is also a private game reserve, home to abundant birdlife, plains game, and unspoiled bushveld scenery. Guests can enjoy tranquil walks, wildlife sightings, and sweeping views across a landscape that remains largely unchanged since 1879.

Our commitment to the region extends far beyond tourism. Through The David Rattray Foundation, we actively support education and opportunity in local rural communities, helping to create lasting, positive change. Each year, we support over 6,450 children and young people and more than 300 educators. Our work spans the full education journey – from preschool to employment – with programmes that strengthen teaching, open access to skills and opportunity, and help young people shape their own futures.  We are also proud to employ and train people from surrounding communities, investing in local skills development and ensuring that the benefits of tourism are shared meaningfully and sustainably.

Fugitives’ Drift is more than a lodge, it is our home and is a place of remembrance, storytelling, conservation, and empowerment, offering an unforgettable journey into the heart of KwaZulu Natal.
