Lairds Lodge Country Estate
Over 30 Years of Love, Passion and Heritage
The story of Laird’s Lodge began in 1994, when Alison and Murray Brebner, travelling along the beautiful Garden Route from Johannesburg, stumbled upon a rather neglected but utterly charming Cape Dutch homestead just outside Plettenberg Bay.
Originally built some 70 years earlier as a dairy farm, the property consisted of a modest four-bedroom farmhouse, surrounded by old dairy sheds and stables. Despite its somewhat tired appearance, Alison and Murray immediately recognised its charm and potential. They fell in love with the property, and so began a remarkable journey of restoration, dedication and passion.
Over the next three decades, the humble farmhouse was lovingly transformed into the elegant 17-room country lodge that welcomes guests today. Every corner of Laird’s Lodge tells a story, reflecting years of thoughtful improvements, personal touches and an enduring love for this special place.
The Heart of Laird’s Lodge – Our People
Of course, no story of Laird’s Lodge would be complete without the people who have helped shape it.
BeeBee, who had been the chef at Alison and Murray’s restaurant in Johannesburg, was invited to join the Laird’s family just six months after their move. Four years later, Lesley came on board, followed by Bani and his family. Over the years, the team gradually grew into the wonderful Laird’s family that guests know and love today.
Many of these relationships span decades, bringing a rare sense of continuity, warmth and genuine hospitality to the Lodge.
Growing Alongside Plettenberg Bay
In those early days, Plettenberg Bay was very much a seasonal holiday destination, with tourism flourishing for barely two months of the year. As the Garden Route grew in popularity and Plett evolved into a sought-after destination, the tourism season gradually extended to around eight months. Laird’s Lodge grew alongside the town, welcoming visitors from around the world while never losing the intimate charm and relaxed elegance of its country house beginnings.
Today, more than 30 years later, Laird’s Lodge remains a labour of love — a place where history, hospitality and a genuine sense of family come together.
