Makakatana Bay Lodge
Makakatana Bay Lodge, perched on the western shores of Lake St Lucia within iSimangaliso Wetland Park, South Africa’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site serves as the only privately owned luxury lodge in this 1.3-million-hectare conservation jewel. Meaning “miracle and wonder” in isiZulu, the park protects Africa’s largest estuarine system, the world’s highest vegetated coastal dunes, converging wetlands, forests, savannahs, and marine habitats teeming with life. Established in 1999 by Hugh and Leigh-Ann Morrison, whose family has deep roots here since the early 1900s (now fourth-generation stewards), the lodge embodies authentic generational passion, warm hospitality, and a commitment to sharing our home with guests from around the world.
Fully solar-powered and multi-award-winning (including the 2024 World Luxury Hotel Awards), Makakatana offers intimate luxury across just eight elevated suites. These include five luxury suites (two adults + one child on day bed), two family suites (two adults + two children), and one romantic honeymoon suite. Each features spacious open-plan designs with warm wooden beams, private viewing decks overlooking the wetlands, air conditioning, minibars, tea/coffee stations, and luxurious en-suite bathrooms with indoor/outdoor showers and baths. The lodge blends seamlessly into the coastal forest, with a bush pool overlooking Makakatana Bay, boma fireside area, lounge, bar, and our historic wine cellar (“i.e. The Crab House”).
Guests discover iSimangaliso’s wild soul through exclusive adventures: solar-powered eco-boat cruises departing right from the lodge’s bay for intimate sightings of hippos, crocodiles, and vibrant birdlife (over 500 species); full-day boat safaris along the lake’s narrows; guided day and night game drives revealing elephants, leopards, rhinos, buffalo, waterbuck, and nyalas across diverse ecosystems; full-day beach excursions crossing the lake to pristine Indian Ocean shores for snorkeling and relaxation; plus nature walks and seasonal whale watching.
Ideal for families (children 6+ on drives), couples, and nature lovers, Makakatana delivers personalized service, genuine connections to the land, and sustainable immersion in one of the planet’s most biodiverse wonders, creating memories and a soulful appreciation for authentic South African wilderness.
